1. Windalco escapes US sanctions
The impact of United States (US) sanctions on the West Indies Alumina Company (Windalco), owned by United Company (UC) Rusal of Russia, has been alleviated, at least for now, following sustained lobbying by the Jamaican Government. The Jamaican Government has been engaging US authorities in a quest to stave off the closure of the local bauxite plant to save the jobs of some 1,200 workers at the company in Ewarton, St Catherine. 2. Court reserves decision on #VybzKartelAppeal
The Court of Appeal has reserved its decision in the legal challenge filed by popular entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants against their murder convictions and lengthy prison sentences. 3. Contender showdown – Holmes vs Salas
“This is the third time that I will be fighting for the Contender title, and I am going to take it this year,” declared Jamaica’s Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes yesterday, as he commented on his chances tonight, in the 10-round final of the 2018 Wray and Nephew Welterweight Contender competition, against Ricardo ‘Magic Man’ Salas of Canada, which takes place at the National Indoor Sports Centre, at Independence Park. 4. J’can-born Jobson choreographs for Andrea Bocelli tour
Jamaica-born dancer and choreographer Kris Jobson, has added to his growing list of accomplishments when he was commissioned as the choreographer of the German tour for Andrea Bocelli in concert, performing with renowned ballerina and model Lia Kemendi. See full story on The Gleaner’s website.
5. Section of St Mary Junction Road to be closed
The National Works Agency (NWA) says a section of the Junction Road in St Mary will be closed to traffic for six hours per day beginning Monday, July 30 to facilitate ongoing road construction works along the corridor. Acting Communication Manager at the NWA Ramona Lawson says for the safety of all road users, traffic will not be permitted during the period of the closure as there will be extensive rock excavation and drilling works causing displacement of boulders. 6. Region urged to brace for floods
The Barbados-based Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology says there is a potential for flooding and flash floods across the region during the next three months even as the rainfall totals are forecast to be the usual or lower for the peak of the wet season.
